About me

Joel Telpner is the Chair of Sullivan & Worcester LLP’s Fintech and Blockchain Practice. He is a seasoned advisor, strategist, and problem solver. Joel brings more than 30 years of legal experience in a career that includes time as an AmLaw 100 partner, the former U.S. general counsel of a global financial institution, and a venture capitalist. He is a highly sought after legal advisor in the blockchain space and a well-known thought leader in the industry.  

Joel was named as one of the Top 10 Fintech attorneys in America by the Chambers and Partners in their Fintech 2019 edition and a“Trailblazer” in the National Law Journal’s inaugural Cryptocurrency, Blockchain and Fintech List, among other recognitions.

He structured some of the first ICOs and blockchain-based applications, including the first issuance of digital securities utilizing blockchain technology for Overstock.com, and helped Overstock’s tZero trading platform obtain the necessary regulatory approval to trade crypto securities. 

His clients describe him as a "very sharp and very experienced partner" that can "sort through the chaff and get to the nub of things impressively quickly." His practice features considerable strength in the blockchain and cryptocurrency field, particularly with regards to regulatory compliance in areas such as token offerings and trading.

He led a panel discussion about ICOs and Best Practices in Davos during the World Economic Forum in January 2018, and co-founded the Stablecoin Foundation, a global trade association for stablecoins in October 2018.

Joel works on global regulatory policy initiatives for theBlockchain Research Institute, the Global Blockchain Business Council, Wharton Reg@Tech, the Wall Street Blockchain Alliance’s Legal Working Group, and the Digital Currency and Ledger Defense Coalition.

Being recognized worldwide as an authority on blockchain and cryptocurrency issues, Joel currently sits on several of the industry’s leading research groups and has spoken extensively worldwide. He has been active in this space since 2014.
